Azerbaijan Highlights Energy Efficiency Achievements at IEA Global Conference in Brussels

JUNE 13, 2025

Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov participated in the 10th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency, organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA), held in Brussels, Belgium, Renewables.az reports, citing the Ministry of Energy.

Speaking at the High-level Panel “From Awareness to Ambition to Action” and during the ministerial round table, Minister Shahbazov shared insights on the role of energy efficiency in advancing energy security and global climate objectives, while also presenting Azerbaijan’s national policies and achievements in this field. He stressed the critical role of investments, knowledge exchange, and international cooperation in driving progress in energy efficiency.

The Minister emphasized that renewable energy and energy efficiency—two key pillars of the clean energy transition—are strategic priorities within Azerbaijan’s modern energy policy and socio-economic development agenda. He noted that in a short period, Azerbaijan has established a modern legislative framework and created a dedicated fund to support energy efficiency, in line with the country’s ambition to become a leader in green growth and environmental sustainability.

Minister Shahbazov highlighted the exemplary energy efficiency model being implemented in the Karabakh and East Zangazur regions, which have been designated as green energy zones by President Ilham Aliyev. “In these territories, alongside the construction of smart grids from scratch, advanced energy efficiency standards and digital management infrastructure are being introduced. Additionally, 90 renewable energy plants with a combined capacity of 1.6 GW are planned to be built by 2030. These facilities will help save up to 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2 million tons,” he stated.

Furthermore, the Minister noted that Azerbaijan is currently implementing green energy projects with a total capacity of 6.7 GW by 2030. This includes 2.7 GW for export to the regional energy system and 4 GW through the Caspian-Black Sea-European Green Energy Corridor. With these new capacities, Azerbaijan aims to increase the share of green energy in the country’s installed energy mix to 38% and avoid the consumption of 4.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

Minister Shahbazov also underscored Azerbaijan’s focus on building green energy interconnectors, which will position the country as a key supplier of green electricity in Europe’s energy transition and enhance connectivity between the Caspian Basin, Central Asia, Türkiye, and Europe. “Through these initiatives—which aim to reduce energy losses, balance regional grids, boost renewable energy integration, optimize production and consumption, minimize emissions, and reinforce energy security—Azerbaijan will make a substantial contribution to advancing energy efficiency across the wider region,” he added.

The conference concluded with the adoption of a Joint Statement, which reaffirmed that energy efficiency plays a critical role in the global energy transition. The statement highlighted the importance of strong national and international action and called for accelerating progress toward the goal of doubling global energy efficiency by 2030, as outlined at COP28. It also underscored the need for solutions driven by technological innovation, financial cooperation, and social equity in the lead-up to COP29.
