Azerbaijan is advancing plans to establish a green energy export route through its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to Türkiye. This initiative envisions exporting up to 1 GW of renewable electricity—generated from Nakhchivan’s abundant solar and wind resources—directly to Türkiye.
Selim Güven, Director for Azerbaijan and Türkiye at ACWA Power, stated that this corridor is part of a broader regional plan to build green energy corridors connecting Azerbaijan with Europe, as well as Central Asian neighbors. He emphasized the model’s ability to replicate Azerbaijan’s energy sector experience in renewable power development.
Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov noted that a detailed concept and feasibility study for the Naxçıvan–Azerbaijan–Türkiye green energy corridor is underway. The plan explores not only energy export via Nakhchivan but also interconnections with East Zangezur and future Eastern energy hubs.
The move is part of Azerbaijan’s broader strategy to harness its significant renewable potential—estimated at over 130 GW on land and nearly 160 GW offshore—for regional clean energy supply . It aligns with efforts to expand solar and wind energy infrastructure, such as the 240 MW wind farm and 315 MW solar facilities currently under construction, which are expected to come online soon.
By facilitating green energy exports via Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan aims to strengthen regional energy integration, diversify its energy portfolio, and support Türkiye’s growing demand for renewable electricity. The establishment of this corridor represents a strategic step toward sustainable energy transition in the South Caucasus and beyond.
