IATA: Azerbaijan Preparing for Transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuel

MAY 13, 2025

Azerbaijan is preparing for a phased transition to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The country is taking steps to align with global aviation decarbonization goals and reduce its carbon footprint in the air transport sector.

In a recent statement, IATA praised Azerbaijan’s commitment to environmental sustainability and noted that work is already underway to create a roadmap for the development and use of SAF in the country. Discussions with stakeholders include regulatory planning, technical feasibility, and investment opportunities in green fuel production.

Azerbaijan is strategically positioning itself to support regional aviation with low-emission fuel solutions. The shift to SAF is part of broader national efforts to decarbonize key sectors and contribute to global climate targets in line with the country’s COP29 hosting responsibilities.

The move also presents opportunities for international partnerships, technology transfer, and economic diversification, as Azerbaijan explores new green growth sectors including renewable energy and clean fuel production.
